Brown Vine Snake

Meet the Horsewhip, also known as the Brown Vine Snake. The Horsewhip (Oxybelis rutherfordi) is one of Tobago’s most slender and fascinating snakes.

Often mistaken for a thin branch or vine, this remarkable snake can be found in Tobago’s forests, forest edges, and even gardens, where it spends much of its time stretched along branches and vegetation.

When threatened, the Horsewhip may freeze completely or gently sway like a twig in the breeze, a perfect example of nature’s camouflage.

Despite local folklore, it does not whip people with its tail. The name simply comes from its long, slender appearance. The Horsewhip is not considered dangerous to humans and plays an important role in Tobago’s ecosystems by feeding on small reptiles and amphibians.
