Green Hill Waterfall

Long before it became a quiet escape for hikers, the Hillsborough East River powered the sugar mills of Green Hill and Mount St. George estates. Its waters once turned heavy waterwheels, feeding the colonial sugar economy that shaped this side of Tobago.

Today the same river plunges over steep rocky walls, best seen in the rainy season when the cascade comes alive. A simple scenic park surrounds the falls, offering shade, the sound of falling water, and a sense of stillness that larger spots rarely match.

Upstream, the Hillsborough Reservoir (commissioned in 1952) still holds the island’s most reliable drinking water. Downstream, the falls remain a living reminder of Tobago’s layered past, plantation power, mid-century engineering, and the quiet resilience of the land.
