Meet Tobago’s Green Iguana

Quietly moving through Tobago’s trees is one of the island’s most recognisable reptiles: the green iguana (Iguana iguana).

With its long tail, row of spines and powerful build, this tree-dwelling lizard is a familiar sight around Tobago’s forests, rivers and countryside.

Known locally as the “green chicken” or “chicken of the trees,” the iguana has also been part of Tobago’s bush culture and food traditions for generations.

Today, iguana hunting is regulated, with the 2026–2027 season running from October 1 to December 31.

So, the next time you’re exploring Tobago’s rainforest, countryside or river valleys, keep an eye on the trees.

You might just spot Tobago’s “green chicken” watching from above.
