Meet Tobago’s Jesus Hill
By TT Travel • 1792510012

Rising quietly above the leafy slopes and sunlit ridges of southwestern Tobago is one of the island’s most rewarding hidden viewpoints: Jesus Hill.
Perched in the peaceful village of Les Coteaux (French for “the hillsides”), this elevated ridge offers sweeping panoramic views of the Caribbean coastline, the airport far below, and the endless blue of the sea. The trail is gentle enough for most visitors yet rewarding enough to make the short climb feel like a true escape into authentic Tobago.
Locally known in earlier times as Jumbie Hill, named after the spirits and supernatural beings of Caribbean folklore, the site was later cleared and renamed Jesus Hill by a community fitness and hiking enthusiast. The change reflects Tobago’s deep Christian roots and the desire to turn a place once associated with mystery into a space for quiet reflection, exercise, and connection with the landscape.
The surrounding Les Coteaux area carries a much longer story. Once a thriving sugar estate with one of the island’s largest water-powered mills (operating until 1943), the hills still hold remnants of colonial-era dams, canals, and ruins near the Courland River. The village itself is steeped in oral traditions, including tales of jumbies and the legendary African figure Gang Gang Sara, making the ridge a place where natural beauty and cultural memory meet.
Today Jesus Hill is a favourite for those seeking an unhurried, non-touristy experience. Early mornings bring cooler air and soft light; late afternoons reward hikers with golden sunsets over the water. Whether you’re pausing at the summit stick that marks the top, listening to the breeze in the trees, or simply taking in the quiet, the hill offers a gentle reminder of Tobago’s layered landscape, past and present.
Respect the trail, leave no trace, and enjoy the views responsibly so future visitors can share the same sense of discovery.
The next time you’re exploring Tobago’s countryside, following the Plymouth or Arnos Vale roads, or looking for a peaceful hike with a view, keep your eyes on the ridges of Les Coteaux.
You might just find yourself standing on Jesus Hill, watching the island stretch out below.
