Meet Tobago’s Red-billed Tropicbird

Meet Tobago’s Red-billed Tropicbird

Gliding effortlessly on the ocean breeze, with long white tail streamers trailing behind, the red-billed tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus) is one of Tobago’s most graceful seabirds.

With its bright red bill, black eye-mask and striking white plumage, it is hard to miss when one appears against Tobago’s blue skies.

These remarkable birds spend most of their lives at sea, feeding on flying fish and small squid. They return to land mainly to breed, with the rocky cliffs and islands around Tobago’s northeastern coast providing important nesting grounds.

Little Tobago, also known as Bird of Paradise Island, and the nearby St. Giles Islands are particularly important. During the nesting season, visitors may see these birds soaring above the cliffs, hovering on the wind or even moving awkwardly around their nesting areas.

Locally known as “boatswain birds,” their sharp, whistle-like calls were once compared to the sound of a boatswain’s pipe aboard sailing ships.

Although the red-billed tropicbird is found throughout tropical oceans and is not unique to Tobago, it has become an important part of the island’s natural identity, especially around Speyside and Little Tobago.

If you’re heading out on the water around Tobago’s northeastern coast, keep your eyes on the sky.

You might just spot one of these beautiful seabirds riding the breeze above the cliffs.
