Known for its electric blue body, glowing yellow tail, and the distinctive blue-ringed “crown” on its forehead, the Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) has long been a native treasure of Tobago’s coral gardens. Documented on Buccoo Reef as far back as a 1969 postcard, this elegant fish has always been part of the island’s underwater story- graceful, curious, and perfectly at home among the sponges and soft corals.

With its vibrant colours and smooth, purposeful movements, it may not race through the water like some reef fish, but once you spot that crowned head gliding past, it becomes an unforgettable sight. You’ll often find the Queen Angelfish on shallow reefs, near tube sponges, coral heads, and the edges of drop-offs places where its specialised diet of sponges and its calm, watchful nature serve it well.

Sometimes, discovering Tobago’s marine wonders doesn’t require deep diving or long boat rides. It can be right beneath your mask on a sunny snorkel, drifting alongside you over the reef, or hovering just beyond the coral as you float in clear turquoise water.
