Topaz Beach
By TT Travel • 1787068130

Long before it was called Topaz Beach, this quiet cove was part of Canoe Bay, one of Tobago’s oldest recorded landing places.
In Amerindian times, dugout canoes regularly crossed from northeast Trinidad to this sheltered bay. The Dutch later mapped it as Kano baeij and Canoo Bay in the 1600s, making it one of the earliest place names still used on the island.
For centuries it remained a natural harbour for fishermen, turtlers and travellers. While other parts of Tobago were turned into sugar estates, this stretch stayed relatively quiet.
The name “Topaz” came much later, a modern nickname inspired by the striking blue-green colour of the water. Today it’s still one of those rare spots that feels hidden, even as Crown Point grows busier around it.
A small cove with a long memory.
