Yellow-headed Caracara

Meet the Yellow-headed Caracara, one of Tobago’s increasingly familiar raptors and a sharp-eyed piece of the island’s evolving wild story.

Known for its creamy yellow head, dark wings, and bold presence, the Yellow-headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima) first appeared on Tobago’s records in 1987. Since then, this intelligent and adaptable bird has been slowly making itself at home, becoming an uncommon but noticeable part of the island’s open landscapes.

With its pale head, contrasting dark body, and steady, purposeful flight, it may not have the dramatic speed of a true falcon, but once you know what to look for, it becomes a striking and memorable sight. You’ll often find the Yellow-headed Caracara in open country, pastures, forest edges, roadsides, and areas near human activity, places where its scavenging and opportunistic habits serve it well.

Sometimes, discovering Tobago’s wildlife doesn’t require a deep rainforest hike. It can be perched along a country road, soaring over a field, or calling loudly from a high branch near a village.
